Tiamat, The Dark Mother

Tiamat

Tiamat is a primordial goddess of the ocean, mating with Abzû (the god of fresh water) to produce younger gods. She is the symbol of the chaos of primordial creation, depicted as a woman. She represents the beauty of the feminine, depicted as the glistening one. It is suggested that there are two parts to the Tiamat mythos, the first in which Tiamat is a creator goddess, through a “Sacred marriage” between salt and fresh water, peacefully creating the cosmos through successive generations. In the second “Chaos”, Tiamat is considered the monstrous embodiment of primordial chaos. Some sources identify her with images of a sea serpent or dragon.

When in the height heaven was not named,

And the earth beneath did not yet bear a name.

In the Enûma Elish, the Babylonian epic of creation, she gives birth to the first generation of deities; her husband, Apsu, correctly assuming they are planning to kill him and usurp his throne, later makes war upon them and is killed. Enraged, she, too, wars upon her husband’s murderers, taking on the form of a massive sea dragon, she is then slain by Enki’s son, the storm-god Marduk, but not before she had brought forth the monsters of the Mesopotamian pantheon, including the first dragons, whose bodies she filled with “poison instead of blood”. Marduk then forms heavens and the earth from her divided body.

Tiamat is the Sumero-Babylonian Mother and Chaos Goddess. She is the elemental powerful force of chaos, the Mother of Everything, the self-procreating womb, the source of all life and all manifestation.

Tiamat’s themes are history, change, spirituality, fertility, birth and creativity. Her symbols are reptiles and seawater. The personification of creative, fertile forces in Assyro-Babylonian traditions, she is the inventive power of chaos, whose ever-changing energy hones the human soul and creates unending possibilities for its enlightenment

To call on the creative power of Tiamat, use the colors blue and green to represent the waters of creation and to inspire creativity, also symbolizing new beginnings bringing you the power to find new paths in your life.

She especially helps celebrate women’s ability to overcome and hold onto their power.

Dark Mother

Who is the Dark Goddess?

There is more to the “Dark Goddess” than being an elderly woman, the Crone, Hag or Death Bringer aspect of the Goddess. She is the shape shifter, the initiator, the challenger, the seductress. She reminds us of our own mortality, our fears and failings in order to help us transform our lives.

Harvest Full Moon

On September 16, 2016, a full water moon will appear in the sign of Pisces, opposite to the sun sign Virgo. It’s known as Harvest Moon, Wine Moon or Singing Moon. There will also be a penumbra eclipse. This type of eclipse happens when the moon enters the penumbra, an area of the Earth’s shadow which is not completely hidden from the sun’s rays.

The Full Moon nearest the autumnal equinox is named the Harvest Moon since, during this month, the Moon helps the harvest by providing more light at the right time than other Full Moons do.

A full moon in Pisces is the perfect time to tap into your clairvoyant powers, tell fortunes and interpret dreams. Psychic powers are heightened now, as is your ability to communicate with the spirit world.

Pisces represents the 12th house which is our subconscious, it’s also the last house in the zodiac and represents that which is hidden to us, confinement, release and endings. Virgo is ruled by Mercury which is our analytical mind, this configuration is indicating our minds release.

The journey within is how we will connect with our inner selves for the heart to reflect who we truly are. The heart will begin reflecting what’s hidden there, it will not be pleasant for many because many will be ashamed and afraid that others will see their darkness. The smoke and mirrors of only showing others what we want them to see will be over, we will not be able to control what other people think and feel about us with the illusions we’ve built, they will get a good look at who we are.

The Full Moon is the time to really go for what you want. The Moon’s energy is incredibly powerful, and you can ask her to help you in nearly any request. Full Moon energy is available three days before and after the actual date of the Full Moon, so use this time for divination, dreams, love and whatever else your heart desires.

Lunar Eclipses

Consider this fact about lunar eclipses: a lunar eclipse can only occur during the night of a full moon. This means you will be working with full moon energy. A lunar eclipse does not have to be visible for you to work magic.

Magic spells performed during lunar eclipses combine the power of the full and new moons simultaneously. Therefore, consider carefully your wishes. Any spell performed during a Lunar Eclipse must be done carefully, as one is invoking the Triple Goddess in each of her forms. Consider carefully what you wish and write it out beforehand.

During a lunar eclipse, we experience what might be called a “micro month”. The moon is full, then partially or completely hidden, and then visible again. Within just a few minutes, an energy similar to a complete cycle of full, waning, new/black (if it is a total lunar eclipse), waxing and full again.

Tiamat and the Moon and Eclipse are made for each other. The seas and the moon have always been connected in one way or another.

The goddess Tiamat of the Middle East was the goddess of the primal abyss. She ruled over destruction, revenge, karmic discipline, salt water, war, evil, despair, dark magick, death, regeneration and rituals.

Knowledge of the Dark Mother is a necessity if we are to grow spiritually. We must lose the programmed fear we have been taught. The Dark Mother helps with karma, self discipline and despair.

Tiamat helps with despair in that she can show us what caused the problems troubling us (oftentimes from past lives) and what the future may hold if we change our paths even slightly.
